Democracy is a Farce.

A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine.

~ Thomas Jefferson

Reagan Flag for Democracy is a Farce

Democracy.

Like Communism in China, Democracy in the United States (and much else of the World) is a Farce, a Fallacy, an Illusion.

One element of Democracy is the majority rule aspect which is often manipulated by those in Power to give those being ruled the feeling that everyone else is on the Band Wagon and you should be too.  It is impossible to ever know about what opinions or beliefs are of the ruling majority because the Corporate Media manipulates what appears to be status-quo or simply makes up information.

As we know, Information is Knowledge in the form of  Truth or Propaganda (and often a very murky, grey area), and Knowledge is Power that is a double-edged sword.

Think about that one for a minute.

On a small-scale perhaps Democracy can be achieved since it is easier for a consensus to be reached.

On a large-scale however, there are a few essentials that need to be present for a fighting chance of Democracy.

First: a responsible government needs to be in place. The United States – with an exception or two – hasn’t had a responsible government since before Woodrow Wilson (when incidentally Wilson signed America’s Economic Life Blood away in 1913 to the Federal Reserve which now prints fiat paper money at will and is arguably the cause of Amerika’s financial woes).

Second: there must be Constitutional Protections that are enforced by a responsible Government.

Uhm, Riiiiight.

Let us not forget when Christian Baby Bush called the Constitution a ‘goddamn piece of paper’ when discussing the Patriot Act (which made Amerika the UNfree) & amending the Constitution. Real respect and real responsible, eh?

Damn, we’re back at Square One.

As in Nazi Germany, the Tyranny of the Majority (when the Media is controlled, that is what it is) rip Liberties from the Individual; Gay Marriages, Drug Laws, Gun Laws, Abortion Rights (the list goes on) are good examples.  Democratic Power becomes impossible for Dissenting Individuals and are subsequently oppressed.

Third: an essential aspect of a Democracy are Competitive Elections. Observers from around the world often travel to other Democratic Countries to insure that Elections are fair both substantively & procedurally. If anyone remembers the FIF (Fiasco in Florida) with the election ballots making Baby Bush the Big Cheese, you know that this is most likely impossible – or at least extremely difficult – to achieve.

The FIF News made it out to the Masses and is still a topic of debate… but remember FIF was just what We the People heard about.

For every Morsel of BS that we hear about

There are Massive Chunks that go unheard.

Fourth: the Freedom of Speech or moreover the Freedom of Political Expression are vital in a Democracy.  However, when the Protesters are forced to adhere to The Rules designed to make it very difficult to get a variety of permits, then are confined to a specific area while their pictures are being taken by the Authorities, and then are subject to the  Corporate Media which films only certain incidences portraying Protesters to be small in number & a bit kooky – or ignores them completely, how is this Freedom of Speech & Political Expression?

“PROTESTERS! You can say what you want – but first give us money, do it in this small roped off area away from the Political Event and don’t cause any trouble!”

Fifth: the Freedom of the Press is essential so that The People are well-informed and able to make an ‘educated’ Choice.

As mentioned above, The People don’t get an Educated Choice or even and Educated Guess since the Corporate Media has the Monopoly on the cable wires & air waves and provides The Hollywood Grooming (how many politicians were actors before they were elected? Two come to Mind immediately), The Antics &  The Propaganda – AKA Information.

Read 1984 by George Orwell then watch the movie Wag the Dog to get a gist of what we are discussing here.

When the Republican Friendly FoxNews reports on an election, this is not bias?

If you watch a commercial, then the news you watch is most certainly biased.

It is a Media Circus, and while the Masses are watching the Trapeze Artists, the Bears on Uni-cycles, The Clowns, & the shifty eyed Mustachioed Orator; the hired pick pocket is working his Majik.

Democracy?

The president is a Puppet. It matters not the color, creed or political party of the man chosen to ‘lead’ the country. His strings are pulled by something much bigger & darker, and the Puppet Master is part of something much older & stronger.

It is imperative that The People think they have a choice in their country’s Political Journey, and they need a scapegoat when things go topsy-turvy.

The President  meets those needs.

The Corporate sponsored Government may throw a bone now and again (i.e. healthcare: YIPPEE … they should’ve been doing this a long time ago), to keep the masses docile while said Corporations engage in the plundering of our Planet.

Americans are debating the Health Care Issue while their government is taking the health care away (i.e. killing people) in the Middle East in the name of Freedom.

Truth? Truth is Information (often within a paradigm, but we can chat about ‘Absolute’ Truth at another juncture).

Information is Knowledge and we all know that Knowledge is Power. Communication is the sharing of Information and there can only be Communication among Equals.

The government does not treat its People as equals, but rather as mere Consumers that also drive The WorkForce  (they need slaves to keep the ‘economy’ going i.e.  keep the hierarchy comfortable).

And since Corporations control Government AND the Media; it can be safely assumed that anything -much of the Information spewed across the airwaves & into your average person’s living room for example – by the Corporate Media (foxnews/cnn) is Propaganda disguised as news (Edward Bernays wrote a book called ‘Propaganda’ in the late 1920s and it is still used as a bible for wannabe Mediacrats and Technocrats. Bernays was a millionaire during The Depression. And for those of you who don’t know, he was Sigmund F’s  nephew).

George Orwell has a lot to say about Government and Truth, and as I’ve mentioned before, his book 1984 eerily comes to mind. I know most of you have probably read it but I suggest if you haven’t read ‘1984’ in a while, read it again as I have recently; and put it into context.

It is disturbing.

Seek Truth but don’t get caught up in this Media Circus meant to divert the short attention spans of the Populace away from things that are of vital importance; and that is what do we do about Korporate Amerika raping & pillaging of ‘our’ Land & the Land of Exotic Peoples far away?

What is Democracy?

Is it a choice between 2 entities perhaps 3 as in the United States- the Land of the Free?

As you have been shown – hardly.

When asking a Child if they would like to eat some spinach, one may hear a resounding NO. Interestingly though, when you give the same Child a choice between spinach & green beans, they will often pick one… especially if they are hungry.

A variety of Corporations control who will contend for the position of CEO in the U.S. Government and subsequently what the President will do (Dick Cheney* is a prime example).

They are giving The Voter (The Child) a choice between two Entities.

This is akin to giving the Voter a choice between Dog Shit & Cat Shit.

The Voter scrambles to march in the parades, get up on the Soap Boxes, argue with members of their family, work-mates & friends about which Shit is the Better Shit.

“Hey! I heard that One of the Shits is the Lesser of the Two Evils!”

Look Pal, it’s still Evil and it’s still Shit…

Damn, perhaps if it was a bit of Cow Shit we might find a Psychedelic Mushroom on it.

Then we can wait about a half hour and stop Giving a Shit.

Power to the People.

We are not mere Mammals that need to answer to an Alpha-Male spewing his Nationalistic Rhetoric, marking his Territory with Patriotic Piss (i.e. a National Flag) and keeping the Masses in a perpetual state of Fear (that comes in all Guises).

Democracy?

I don’t know what One would call the political state of affairs in much of the ‘Democratic’ World.

But it sure the hell isn’t Democracy.

Perhaps it’s Dumbocracy.

Treat Others well and be Well.

political/country FLAGS:

Though born in the USA, that is merely the spot on Earth where the Spirits dumped me.

It could have been in India.

It could have been in Iraq.

It could have been the UK.

It could have  been Atlantis.

Point is, we are Earthlings first.

Think this way and your differences with other Cultures become Minuscule.

Which brings us to the use of Political Flags i.e. a Country Flag.

Appreciate the Land you were Born in and Live.

Appreciate the People that gave/give Your Land its Culture.

But remember…

A Flag is used much the same way other Mammals use Urine to mark their Territory.

In other words…

A Flag is merely a Mammalian Representation of Alpha-Male Piss.

Being an Earthling first diminishes the use of a Flag.

A Country Flag does not represent a People of a Land.

It represents the Entity (i.e. GOVERNment) that controls that Land.

*The Dick – AKA Richard Bruce Cheney brief history:

  • Dick began his political career as an intern for Congressman William A. Steiger.
  • Eventually worked his way into the White House during the Nixon & Ford administrations, where he served the latter as White House Chief of Staff.
  • He briefly served as Acting President of the United States on two occasions during which Bush underwent medical procedures.
  • In 1978, Cheney was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Wyoming; he was reelected five times, eventually becoming House Minority Whip.
  • Cheney was selected to be the Secretary of Defense during the presidency of George H. W. Bush, holding the position for the majority of Bush’s term. During this time, Cheney oversaw the 1991 Operation Desert Storm, among other actions.
  • Out of office during the Clinton presidency, Cheney was chairman & CEO of Halliburton Company from 1995 to 2000.
  • Dick as we all know, served as the 46th Vice President of the United States from 2001 to 2009 in the administration of George W. Bush and had/has much to do with The Wars in the Middle East where Halliburton (the corporation he was CEO of for at least 5 years)  is a major corporation making billions of dollars.

  3. Anyone can run for office. In a democracy people vote for who makes it to the election, sometimes neither candidate is impressive, so unfortunately you have to vote for who you think will do better in office, its still a choice. The Republicans allow corporate America to run the country. Most republicans do not even know what they are fighting for, the corporations do not want taxes raised and then fund all of these political tea parties to get the little folks to fight for them to stay richer. Healthcare is something good for Americans yet they have been swayed like sheep into believing its not good for them out of the corporations greed. All I hear is people saying “lazy lay-abouts collecting free insurance on my tax dollar”…its so offensive and ridiculous.

  4. The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

Every vote, everywhere, would be politically relevant and equal in presidential elections. Candidates would need to care about voters across the nation, not just undecided voters in a handful of swing states.

The bill would take effect only when enacted, in identical form, by states possessing a majority of the electoral votes–that is, enough electoral votes to elect a President (270 of 538). When the bill comes into effect, all the electoral votes from those states would be awarded to the presidential candidate who receives the most popular votes in all 50 states (and DC).

The Constitution gives every state the power to allocate its electoral votes for president, as well as to change state law on how those votes are awarded.

The bill is currently endorsed by over 1,707 state legislators (in 48 states) who have sponsored and/or cast recorded votes in favor of the bill.

In Gallup polls since 1944, only about 20% of the public has supported the current system of awarding all of a state’s electoral votes to the presidential candidate who receives the most votes in each separate state (with about 70% opposed and about 10% undecided). The recent Washington Post, Kaiser Family Foundation, and Harvard University poll shows 72% support for direct nationwide election of the President. Support for a national popular vote is strong in virtually every state, partisan, and demographic group surveyed in recent polls in closely divided battleground states: Colorado– 68%, Iowa –75%, Michigan– 73%, Missouri– 70%, New Hampshire– 69%, Nevada– 72%, New Mexico– 76%, North Carolina– 74%, Ohio– 70%, Pennsylvania — 78%, Virginia — 74%, and Wisconsin — 71%; in smaller states (3 to 5 electoral votes): Alaska – 70%, DC – 76%, Delaware –75%, Maine — 77%, Nebraska — 74%, New Hampshire –69%, Nevada — 72%, New Mexico — 76%, Rhode Island — 74%, and Vermont — 75%; in Southern and border states: Arkansas –80%, Kentucky — 80%, Mississippi –77%, Missouri — 70%, North Carolina — 74%, and Virginia — 74%; and in other states polled: California — 70%, Connecticut — 74% , Massachusetts — 73%, Minnesota – 75%, New York — 79%, Washington — 77%, and West Virginia- 81%.

The National Popular Vote bill has passed 29 state legislative chambers, in 19 small, medium-small, medium, and large states, including one house in Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Michigan, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Oregon, and both houses in California, Colorado, Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Washington. The bill has been enacted by Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington. These five states possess 61 electoral votes — 23% of the 270 necessary to bring the law into effect.

  5. You walk into a store and there on the shelves are two products, let’s say, Democratlate and Conservatine would you say you had a true choice of products? I dare say you wouldn’t stay in the store very long unless they had a very good marketing strategy. One that would force their product down your neck one that made you think, fooled you into thinking, there are only two choices to make. The store next door doesn’t even exist.
So then, the next logical step, besides out the door, would be to ask yourself, if I have to be persuaded, am I really making a choice on my own? And why do I need need to be persuaded? What fundamental part of me is missing that I need someone to help me make a decision for myself? It is, in my mind a farce from the beginning.

    • That’s a very interesting analogy.

Everyone knows Pepsi and Coke dominate the cola market. The marketing strategy is so strong they’ve convinced everyone there are no other options, to the point where you suspect the two cooperate. They’re so good at ramming their product down people’s throats, they can do it without you even realizing you’re drinking one of their products. They own a myriad of labels created to make you think you have a choice, when you don’t. Every grocery store drink aisle you walk down, the two own almost all of it. They even have a decent chunk of the fruit juice action.

Also, with the growth of chains and the shift towards ever bigger boxes, the “store next door” doesn’t much exist either. These big places prefer to do business with big companies and that further reduces the already minimal choices.

Boston Paul Democracy is a Farce. Read why below: Happy Tuesday Eve Fellow Earthlings!

    https://bostonpaul.wordpress.com/2010/02/02/democracy-is-a-farce/Today

Boston Paul I was just writing about Orwell’s 1984 and just saw I have 1,984 NETCONS.

    Synchronicity.

Greg Satterwhite: Hey Paul -I enjoy your perspectives on things, and I’m not going to disagree with you, but I think I could take your points a little more seriously if you were a little more even-handed on the “abuses” of power and information (and maybe drop the “K” in your use of Amerika).

OK, you don’t like Republicans, but Democrats are just as “guilty” and they never get much mention in your posts. Fox News is biased, but they report things that are going on that we would never know about since the “Democratic” media controls just about everything else. I could have written your same post citing all Democratic Presidents, Democratic biased media, etc…

Anyway – thanks for spending the time to think and express.

    Christine Peterson: That was awesome!

Stephanie Conboy: Paul how are things run in Tiawan?Or in your hippy REfuge(which I would love to come and be)

Hank Truck: Let’s bring it back to city states.
    Greek style!
    No, wait…that has different connotations…

Chi Funk Yeah, now they own the supreme court too–well, at least 5 of em. It can only get much worse after last week’s ruling on campaign financing…

Boston Paul Hey Greg! Thank you for the sentiment. I wish you had left your comment @ bostonpaul.wordpress.com, but it’s all good. Great hearing from you!

The K in Amerika is there for a very good reason.

Amerika is not the country I thought it was growing up, and the Patriot Act, which is the most dangerous document produced to date – stripping Americans of their Freedom – must be repealed and until it is, the K stays….

Thank you for bringing that to my attention, I have been doing it for so long I barely notice it anymore. I think I should explain that over at wordpress.

Greg, I pray to the Gods Above (well I don’t, but it sounded good) you don’t think I am a democrat. Scroll up my Wall, look at my profile pic on the left, then observe ‘political views’ right under my birthday.

Calling me a democrat is like calling an Athiest a Mormon.

The last part of your statement I agree with fully, and I mention that in the article.

The Republicans get a lashing from me often because they are the ones that have made it worse for Americans over the last 9 years as they still control much of the government. The Democrats and Republicans all do the same things, but the last 9 years the GOP has been so Blatant, it boggles the Mind.

I am not big fan of Obama either, and he has not escaped my berating and internet Wrath. When the Elections were in Full Swing and the internet was alive with Obama Love, I was dissenting like a Rabid Fox against the Pack of Obama loving Dogs (actually I was writing about both candidates in similar fashion, but since I knew the Big O was going to win, I focused on him).

Stay tuned for some posts on Obama, the president who promised ‘change’ (change my ass).

But Greg, it matters not really who is president, re-read the article, ignore the K for now.

The Prez is a part in the Machine. It does not matter who is President Ol’ Chum. Things are still the same. They have no control. They answer to a higher power and it sure the Hell isn’t God… though baby Bush might want you to think it is.

Voting is BS (at least for the Prez).

    Amerika is NOT a Democracy.

Looking forward to hearing more from you, bro!

    • To comment on part of your comment that comments on the gaggle of Facebook comments upon your story in the above comment (Ow, my brain!!!)

So many on the right just automatically assume that anyone who is not a Republican worships Obama’s crew and thinks they can do no wrong. It’s faith based politics. To carry on the analogy, the truth is that the vast majority of Americans are political atheists/agnostics and there are a lot of “spiritualists” left without a home in either party.

Bill Maher had a line in a segment of a summer 2009 episode of his show that sums up the last few decades of US politics fairly well…

“The Democrats have moved to the right and the Republicans have moved into a mental hospital.”

      watch the whole segment here:

Because there is so little choice, so little actual policy variation between parties and because this system is so bought & paid for and pre-ordained, very few new/good ideas are even discussed, let alone adopted. The political process has essentially seized up. Politics has degenerated into yelling matches over today’s “scandal”, and both teams just try to score points on the other team. The drooling masses love this shit. They get sucked into the thrill of combat, and don’t see how it can be any other way.

They argue over dominance, not ideas. I’d say “power” but the real power lies outside even the politicians’ reach, inside corporate offices.

    • things r geting worse-ecomedy is still bad-
people r trying to work even 3 jobs-
and acriding to the myans,in 2112 we not might be here anyhow-lol
      when the world blows-
      johny-d

  7. Yeah, Boston Paul, that’s what I’m talking about. A nice piece of meat to sink your teeth into. So meaty, they’ll be plenty left over for another time.

First: A Responsible government needs to be in place.

A responsible government can only exist within a society dominated by responsible citizens, via either a responsible overall population or a responsible ruling class elite.

Without a doubt, America fails miserably on both fronts. If you were to just list popular irresponsible trends in America, you’d probably use up your entire bandwidth.

This is a culture of selfish, self gratifying, children from top to bottom. It’s so bad, you can’t even count on the elites pulling the collective bacon out of the fryer, even if they wanted to, which they don’t. Today, the elites are just as craven and irresponsible as everyone else, probably more so.

This has gotten worse everywhere, but it’s an epidemic in America. Ignorance and self indulgence is so acceptable, striving for better is now seen as a defect.

Second: there must be Constitutional Protections that are enforced by a responsible Government.

Most Americans are oblivious to their rights beyond their right to “do whatever I want and you can’t stop me!” There is minimal knowledge of what rights exist and why they are important. All that seems to matter is how/if it immediately affects them.

“Fair trials? Fuck that shit. Kill ’em all!”
    “Reading everyone’s e-mails? Fine!”
“Spy Cameras? I ain’t doing nothing wrong! Are you? Maybe I should be watching you too.”

    but at the same time

“No texting while driving? How dare you, this is America!!!”
“Taxes is the government stealing my money!”

As for governments, especially post Sept 11, they’re intent on grabbing as much power and infringing on as many rights as they can. The courts don’t seem very interested in protecting rights, unless it affects the rights of elites.

Nobody seems to give a shit, until they wake up in Gitmo to discover nobody else gives a shit either. But by then, it’s too late.

Third: an essential aspect of a Democracy are Competitive Elections.

    That’s so laughable, it’s sad.

Even presuming complete honesty in a system presided over by elected partisans, Florida 2000 showed how the self-proclaimed inventor of democracy is completely incapable of holding an election. You’ve got such a hodge-podge of ballots and rules that vary wildly from even county to county (Yeah, Boss Hogg’s around the country set election rules.) The process is so inaccurate that the margin of error brings any close election into doubt.

In the time between the US 2000 vote and the actual “winner” being declared, Canada had an entire election campaign and voted using paper ballots that were hand counted. The process was overseen by an independent national organization with standardized rules and the winners were back in the legislature before Bush2 was selected. It also cost a hell of lot less. The entire 2000 Canadian election cost less than what Rudy Giuliani spent to win one delegate in 2008.

As you said, 2 party elections aren’t elections at all. As is currently obvious, parties often succeed merely by not being the other guy. Thanks to Bush, Republicans got slaughtered in 2008. Now they will win landslides for NO other reason than they aren’t the party in power.

In a 2 party system, radicals, undesirables, criminals and racists can gain office just because the other “choice” is worse. While more complicated than an average 2 party race, 1991 Louisiana’s Governors Race between http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwin_Edwards and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke shows just how bad it can get.

“The Lizard vs The Wizard” was insanity at its finest.

Fourth & Fifth: Freedom of Speech & Political Expression are vital

In America, you have all the Freedom of Speech that you can buy. No other speech matters and, in fact, can put you in the Power’s That Be’s rifle scope.

Thanks to Reagan’s elimination of Equal Time provisions and other rule changes, the media’s sole obligation is now to its shareholders. (if only, but that’s another topic)It uses public airwaves to generate maximum private profits and to increasingly spreads political/corporate propaganda.

The media will give airtime and even help promote whatever product a company pays them to. However, having the money to buy airtime does not mean you can get Free Speech. Media outlets can & will deny you access if the management does not condone your message.
    http://www.inthesetimes.com/article/3581/adbusters_ads_busted/

Recently, the US Supreme Court made another idiotic, democracy killing, complete-mockery-of-the-law ruling that removes bans on corporate political advertising. This will ensure the lesser of 2 evils with the most corporate money will win almost every time. It will actually increase the already staggering power of the corporation in society.

    Democracy is a farce.

  8. The only elected officials in the US are the members of the House of Representative. (and even in that case, it was grudgingly granted by the mostly elitist founding fathers)

They have the Electoral College to make sure the President is elite-approved. Members of the Senate are appointed. Even Supreme Court judges are appointed, not elected.

Check our Michael Parenti’s The Myth of the Founding Fathers. (actually anything by Parenti is pretty good)

    part 1

    part 2

    part 3

PS- it’s an audio file with video from a different source.

    • The 17 Amendment (1913) allows for direct election of Senators, but still it should give you a good idea of what the Founding Fathers really thought about democracy – that is, they didn’t care for it much.

    • “They have the Electoral College to make sure the President is elite-approved.” Chris

While I’m sure that played a major role in its creation, I wouldn’t say that was the only reason. Back then, there were functional reasons behind electing electors to go to Washington. They didn’t have any CNN electoral map touch screens, holograms and scrolling viewer Tweets to add excitement to the declaration of the winners with 2-3% of the votes counted.

Those poor bastards actually had to wait for all the votes to be counted, ratified and officially announced before they knew who won! Today, thanks to the power of incumbency (and gerrymandering) the majority of races can be safely called long before the campaign even begins.

Today, other than America’s obsession with tradition, I think the main reason the Electoral College still exists is to reward party workers with free trips to Washington.
